Student of the Month – Michele Salli

Michele Salli, August 2012 Student of the Month

Maitri~ Tell us a little about yourself Michele.

Michele~ I am a family physician with Kaiser and have lived in Colorado for 14 years. I have been married for 17 years and have a delightful 7 year old daughter. My father was in the Air Force, so we moved a lot. I was born in Misawa, Japan. Though I spent a lot of my years in Texas, I am a Coloradan.

Maitri~ What originally drew you to your yoga practice?

Michele~ I started yoga in 2008 after the loss of our baby Faith, as a way to cope with our loss. I only practiced for a few months until my life was in better control and then stopped. Last year I realized I was missing something in my life and wondered if yoga would fill that spot. I started attending class again, this time for me, myself, and I, and I haven’t looked back. Yoga is now part of me.

Maitri~ How does your practice benefit your career?

Michele~ I have a very stressful job, caring for sick people, people who need help in multiple aspects of their life, people who need my compassion and empathy. I can lose myself caring for people, taking on other’s problems and worrying about them. My day is unpredictable and is out of my control, especially when someone is very ill. Yoga has helped me to give my patients what they need, without losing my love for myself and my family. I might have lost control of my day, but I can still breathe and sit up straight–these I can control.

Maitri~ What is your favorite aspect of yoga?

Michele~ I love the challenge of yoga. Initially it was all about arm balances and inversions, but I have come to realize that sitting can be a challenge. And, it will always be a challenge to quiet my mind during savasana.

Maitri~ If you could share anything with a non-practitioner, what would it be?

Michele~ I am amazed at how empowered I am by yoga, whether I’m sitting and breathing or working on a handstand.

Maitri~ Just for giggles, what is your favorite asana posture and why?  Least favorite and why?

Michele~ My favorite asana is crow because I still can’t believe I can actually do it.

My least favorite depends on my day, but most of the time, down dog causes me to fidget because I can’t wait to get out of it.

Maitri~ Anything else that you would like to say?

Michele~ Thank you to Mindy and Bri for helping me find my path to “me”; helping me to know I have control even on the worst days of my life; for helping me to breathe.
